What is a DEXA scan?

Understanding your body’s composition is like having a roadmap for your health and fitness journey. It’s not just about the numbers on a scale; it’s about knowing what your body is made of.  A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan provides a precise analysis of your body's primary components: fat, muscle, and bone*. Following your scan, you will receive an in-depth, multi-page report detailing percentages, mass, and annotated images illustrating the collected data.

*Referrals are required but can be provided through our additional service

What's the difference between a body composition scan at the Gym and a DEXA?

DEXA Scans are considered the gold standard, they provide more accurate and in-depth information compared to a body composition scan at the gym. Where as local gym options such as The BodPod estimate body composition by air displaced in a persons body, a DEXA uses a low dose X-Ray to measure the precise percentage of muscle, fat and lean tissue - as well as checking your bone density!

What preparation is required for an DEXA scan?

There aren’t any special preparations needed, you are not required to fast so can eat and drink as normal however we recommend that you stop taking any calcium supplements for 24 hours before the test.

Wear comfortable clothing. Depending on the body area being scanned, you may have to take off any clothes with metal fasteners, zippers, or hooks. The radiographer may ask you to remove any jewellery or other items, such as keys, that may contain metal. You may be given a gown to wear during the exam.
